indeed, I hadn't reckoned with the modal/non-modal problem. My fault.

Your idea of using a three-state toggle instead of a modal flag in the
Window node is excellent. That should have been my approach when the
problem first came up instead of twiddling with the modal penalty.

I'll take up your suggestion and implement it for qftest version 2.
